Toro Rosso can now complete a deal to use year-old Ferrari engines, after the World Motor Sport Council agreed to allow manufacturers to supply more than one specification of engine.
With Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz now keen to keep both his teams in the sport, it was vital to Toro Rosso’s future that the FIA passed the ruling.
That now means the Faenza based team will likely complete a deal to use Ferrari’s current 2015 power unit, whilst Ferrari’s remaining customers will have access to the 2016-spec unit.
“Power Units homologated in previous seasons may now be re-homologated. Previously no manufacturer could supply more than one specification of PU,” confirmed a statement from the WMSC.
“The World Motor Sport Council was also advised that the FIA had agreed for Ferrari to supply a fourth customer team with a 2015-specification Power Unit in 2016.”
It’s expected Toro Rosso will announce a deal to return to Ferrari power in the coming days, once sister team Red Bull has announced its plans to continue with Renault, but under different branding.
