FP2: Rosberg quickest as Red Bull close in on Mercedes

Nico Rosberg finished second practice for the Mexican Grand Prix quickest as he got to grips with the tricky conditions, as those around him struggled to stay on track.

The German posted a 1:21.531 to beat Red Bull’s Daniil Kyvat to the top spot by two-tenths, whilst the second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo got ahead of Lewis Hamilton in third and fourth respectively.

Conditions proved tricky, with the new asphalt offering little grip. Williams’ Valtteri Bottas damaged his front-wing as he lost control at 200mph and hit the wall, but managed to recover his car back to the pits.

Meanwhile drivers went off at almost every opportunity available, particularly when the rain arrived an hour into the session – though it remained relatively light.

McLaren enjoyed a positive session as Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button both finished in the top ten.

Max Verstappen completed just two laps after an early crash curbed his running.
