Ferrari confused by Raikkonen’s opening lap crash

Ferrari say they’re unable to explain why Kimi Raikkonen crashed on the opening lap of the Austrian Grand Prix, with team principal Maurizio Arrivabene admitting McLaren’s Fernando Alonso wasn’t a factor.

The Finn looked to lose control of the rear and speared left into the path of Alonso. The McLaren came to a rest atop the Ferrari, with both retiring as a result.

Whilst the incident was investigated after the race, the stewards couldn’t place blame and therefore chose not to take any action.

Speaking after the race, Arrivabene said he was confused as to what caused the crash and admitted he had to take Raikkonen’s word as there was little coverage of the clash.

“Honestly I don’t think so,” he replied when asked if the car was at fault.

“I thought Alonso touched Kimi, but apparently it’s not true. Alonso doesn’t have any responsibility,” he admitted.

“Apparently there’s no images on the camera of Alonso so we have to trust Kimi.

“He said the car had wheelspin and that’s it. Alonso didn’t touch him.”

When asked if his Canada spin and his Austrian problems were linked, he added: “We don’t think so. This time it was on the straight.”
