Fernando Alonso will almost certainly be able to take part in the first race of the season in Melbourne in two weeks time, according to McLaren chairman Ron Dennis.
Dennis and racing director Eric Boullier held a press conference on Thursday to address rumours surrounding Alonso’s test crash which saw him remain in hospital for three nights.
The team denied it was witholding information relating to the crash, but said further facts might be uncovered once a full investigation, both by McLaren and the FIA, has been completed.
During the conference Dennis also confirmed that Alonso suffered “a few seconds of unconsciousness” immediately after the impact which resulted in some minor memory loss, but it was “nothing abnormal” for such an incident.
The Spaniard will need to be passed fit by the FIA before he can take part in a grand prix, but Dennis sees no reason why the 33-year-old won’t pass.
“I’m not a doctor, but I can’t foresee any reason why not,” he said. “He is physically perfect.
“There is a process of tests laid down by the FIA and I can’t see any reason why he won’t sail through it, but it’s not for me to determine,” he added.
“All he [Alonso] wants to do at the moment is to race and test.”
