The FIA has confirmed it will investigate the cause of Fernando Alonso’s test crash which happened on Sunday during the second pre-season test.
The Spaniard was knocked unconscious when he struck the trackside wall according to McLaren, he was then airlifted to hospital where he remained for three nights.
The FIA doesn’t regulate the tests as they’re privately organised amongst the teams, therefore it doesn’t often investigate testing incidents such as Alonso’s.
However due to the length of time spent in hospital, the FIA feels it is necessary to see if they can learn anything from the crash to avoid a repeat in future.
“We will be looking very carefully at what happened,” said a FIA spokesman.
“We want to know what took place, so we will be gathering all the information that we can – as well as fully co-operating with McLaren.”
Grainy CCTV footage has also been obtained from a camera at Turn Four which was facing Turn Three – the location of the crash – at the time.
This is believed to support McLaren’s claim that Alonso ran wide due to gusty winds at the time, corrected, slowed but struck the wall before he would straighten the car up.
The investigation doesn’t mean anything untoward happened, with McLaren strongly refuting various theories which have suggested a car fault was to blame.
