Fernando Alonso has been airlifted to hospital for precautionary checks following a crash during the fourth and final day of the second pre-season test in Barcelona.
The Spaniard was on his 21st lap of the day when he suddenly veered right into the trackside wall at Turn Three at around 150kph.
Alonso was “conscious and speaking” when medical crews attended to him. He was then taken to the track’s medical centre by ambulance and later transferred to hospital by air ambulance.
“He was conscious and spoke with the doctors,” confirmed a McLaren-Honda statement.
“However, as per usual procedure in such circumstances, he was then airlifted to hospital where he is undergoing precautionary checks.”
The accident resulted in the session being red flagged for some time whilst debris was cleared from the circuit and Alonso’s McLaren was recovered.
