Pastor Maldonado ended an eventful opening day of the second pre-season Formula 1 test in Barcelona quickest for Lotus despite causing multiple red flags.
The Venezuelan posted a 1:25.011 – quicker than Lewis Hamilton’s 2014 pole position time – to go top, a tenth and a half faster than Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen who had led for much of the morning.
Daniel Ricciardo was third fastest but struggled during the opening hours. He had completed just a handful of laps by lunch, but a better afternoon saw him top that up to 58.
Sergio Perez was fourth in the Force India VJM07, despite not being on the schedule to drive until tomorrow. It came as a result of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg feeling unwell, therefore driving duties at Mercedes fell to reserve Pascal Wehrlein, who had been scheduled to drive the Force India.
20-year-old Wehrlein managed 18 laps before handing the car to Perez and switching to the W06 where he went ninth quickest behind McLaren’s Jenson Button.
Tenth-placed Susie Wolff collided with Felipe Nasr and caused substantial damage to both cars, however they were able to complete a handful of laps in the late-evening thanks to the mammoth effort in both garages to repair the damage.
