Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson is confident the Swiss team will enjoy better success this season compared to last, when the team failed to score a single point all year.
The Swede, who joined from Caterham, described the C34 as a “big step up” on the Caterham and an improvement over the previous Sauber which he drove at the Abu Dhabi post-season test last year.
“It’s difficult to say because I’m coming from a Caterham and this is quite a big step up,” he said, when asked how the car felt in comparison to last year.
“But also compared to the [Sauber] I tested in Abu Dhabi, we have improved,” he added. “I think the car has made progress. It’s a better car this year.
“It’s more stable in general, and under braking and through the corners it gives the driver more confidence.”
Ericsson also believes the improvements made by Ferrari on the engine side have helped and given the team new motivation.
“I think Ferrari have made a good step on the power unit compared to the one I drove in Abu Dhabi. But still we have to wait and see what others have got.
“I got the feeling all winter that everyone in the team is really excited about this season,” he explained.
“I think this week made that feeling even better and gave more energy to the guys back home.”
