McLaren expect better test day after breakthrough

McLaren are confident they will enjoy a better day of testing on Tuesday after making a reliability breakthrough on Monday evening.

The team completed just six laps on the second day of testing thanks to an unknown issue which took all morning and some of the afternoon to resolve.

“The engineers duly attempted to fix matters throughout the morning, carrying out a number of installation runs, but were not able to arrive at a definitive cure,” said a McLaren spokesperson.

“The fix took most of the afternoon to effect, resulting in Jenson [Button’s] running just a single additional lap at the end of the day, which we believe indeed proved to have cured the issue.”

Button is therefore confident that the remaining two test days will see the team complete significantly more running and insists there is no reason to be worried yet.

“It’s not the easiest start to the season, but as we know it’s a very complicated power unit. We will get our heads around it. In terms of the problems we had today we have our head around it and understand the issue, so we’re hoping for a much more productive day three and day four.

“We’ve had a few niggly things we’ve been able to solve, and tomorrow we will see where we stand. Obviously we want to put in as many laps as we can and learn as much as possible, putting mileage on the parts and getting experience for us all with the new power unit. Hopefully we’ll then get to the first race and be competitive.”
