McLaren made the wrong decision to replace Sergio Perez last season, according to Force India’s deputy team principal Bob Fernley.
The Mexican was ousted after just one season, but Fernley believes Perez needed at least another year with the team to show them his true talent after a difficult start to the 2013 season.
However his latter performances were much closer to then team-mate Jenson Button and that’s what convinced Force India he was right for them.
“I think they did, perhaps they should have given him another year,” he told Autosport.
“Based on his second half of last year, which is what we judged when we looked to sign him, I think he did a wonderful job.
“I wasn’t overly impressed about the first six months, but I thought the second part was wonderful and that’s what convinced us he was right.”
