Massa takes pole as Williams secure Austrian 1-2

Felipe Massa will start the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position alongside his team-mate Valtteri Bottas in what is Williams first qualifying 1-2 since the 2003 German GP when Juan-Pablo Montoya led Ralf Schumacher.

The pair looked good throughout practice on Saturday with the possibility of a second-row lock-out looking good, but mistakes from the Mercedes duo in Q3 meant they grabbed the opportunity to go one better.

Nico Rosberg starts third, whilst team-mate Lewis Hamilton is down in ninth after he ran wide at turn eight on his first flyer and then span on his second.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso will start fourth ahead of the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo who once again outqualified his four-time champion team-mate Sebastian Vettel who failed to make it out of Q2.

Kevin Magnussen was the best placed McLaren in sixth, with Jenson Button down in 12th behind Sergio Perez. The Mexican will however drop five places, elevating Button to 11th behind Nico Hulkenberg.

The stewards took a dim view of those exceeding the track limits at turn eight in particular, with Bottas, Kamui Kobayashi, Alonso, Jules Bianchi, Marcus Ericsson, Esteban Gutierrez and Romain Grosjean all having times deleted as a result.
