Formula 1 will switch to standing restarts following safety car periods next season in yet another move to add to the excitement.
During a meeting in London this week, the F1 Commission agreed several changes aimed at spicing up the show for the fans, with rolling restarts highlighted as one area that can be improved.
At present, once all lapped cars have passed the lead car and the safety car has signalled that it’s to come into the pits, the leader controls the pace and can’t be passed until the pack has crossed the first safety car line.
From 2015 – in a move which is hoped will increase overtaking – the pack will line up on the grid in race order after a safety car period for a standing start.
Team personnel won’t be allowed onto the circuit during the restart and changes can’t be made to the cars.
The rule change will go before the World Motor Sport Council next week to be ratified.
