Speculation surrounding Adrian Newey’s future was ended on Sunday after Red Bull announced the British designer had agreed a new deal to keep him at the company for the foreseeable future.

The 55-year-old won’t however remain in his current position as chief technical officer of Red Bull Racing, his duties and responsibilities will change and he might even work on projects away from the F1 team altogether.

Team principal Christian Horner was however delighted to confirm the deal during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend.

“It is great that we have come to an agreement that will continue to advise and mentor the team going forward,” he said. “There are some exciting new projects that will be announced in due course.

“He is still very much involved [with the F1 team]. We will have a further clarification later in the summer.”

Newey has expressed a desire to work on other projects including the Americas Cup and Horner hinted that Newey could split his time between F1 and such projects.

“I think Adrian has reached a stage where he is keen to take on some additional challenges as well. It is great news for the team and Red Bull that we have a multi-year agreement and it is exciting also for Adrian.

“He has always enjoyed the environment of Red Bull and he enjoys working with the people, so it was a pretty straightforward discussion in the end.”
