Daimler chairman and head of Mercedes-Benz, Dr Dieter Zetsche, has downplayed comments he made toward Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso in which he praised the Spaniard.
The German described Alonso as “perhaps the best driver” on the grid, during a visit to Spain last week.
However when questioned about the comments during a press conference, he explained that he was being polite in the company of the Spanish King.
“I was in Spain,” he said. “[King] Juan Carlos was present. I am a polite man.”
Zetsche however reaffirmed his praise toward Alonso amid rumours he is looking to jump ship from Ferrari to a rival, potentially Mercedes, as the Italian outfit’s struggles continue.
“He is however one of the best but I am happy with our current line-up,” added the 61-year-old.
On speculation surrounding Nico Rosberg’s future, which is reportedly secure for another two years, chairman Toto Wolff refused to comment.
