Red Bull’s Helmut Marko says he wouldn’t blame Sebastian Vettel for considering a switch of teams at the end of the season if they can’t recover from their difficult position.
The idea of Vettel driving for Ferrari is a rumour that pops up on an annual basis, but the German has dismissed it each time, saying he is committed to Red Bull.
With the team that’s won the championship for the past four years finding itself struggling for the first time, those rumours will only intensify and Marko wouldn’t blame Vettel for thinking about it.
“If our disastrous state does not change soon, I could not blame him for thinking about a change [of team],” he told Bild.
The team don’t have high hopes for the first race with many questioning whether they’ll even make the finish. Marko has upped his hopes however after the team completely re-wrote Renault’s software which is a major part of the power units problem.
“After the test in Bahrain, we would be happy if we finish in the points in Australia,” he added.
“We know that we have a good car, but we’ll only know if the engine is good if we get it to work properly. The decisive factor is the new software that our engineers wrote for Renault.”
