Whiting admits ‘2014 cars a little ugly, a little odd’

Race director Charlie Whiting has confirmed what many fans feared, that the 2014 cars won’t be aesthetically pleasing thanks to the new technical regulations, particularly surrounding the nose.

In an effort to improve safety, the FIA has reduced the height of the tip of the nose to just 185mm, a reduction of 365mm compared to last year.

Whiting identified that as an interesting area of development, but admitted some of the solutions were a little “ugly” and “odd”.

“I can’t give away too much obviously, but we’ve seen a lot of [different] looks, strange by previous standards, particularly the tip of the nose,” he told BadgerGP.

“So each team is doing their best to overcome the disadvantage aerodynamically of doing that, and so are coming out with different ideas,” he explained.

“I think what you’ll see is some interesting things which a lot of people will think are a little ugly, a little odd. But I’m sure we’ll all get used to it.”

One solution, in order to get as much clean air under the nose and over the front-wing, is to use a very slim nose which has already been dubbed the ‘ant-eater’ due to its appearance.
