Ecclestone: ‘Winning won’t drive Red Bull out of F1’

Red Bull won’t be put off competing in Formula 1 if they continue to dominate the sport, according to Bernie Ecclestone.

Some believe the energy drinks company – which has won the past four drivers’ and constructors’ championships – might pull out of F1 in the near future if it continues to win everything, deciding it’s achieved what it set out to do…which is to promote Red Bull.

Ecclestone however thinks differently and says they’ll stay as long as they continue to get exposure.

“I don’t think so,” he said in response. “Dietrich Mateschitz (owner) is so competitive, he loves racing, he likes when his car wins,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The successes of recent years also mean his team has earned much more than some of the others. Not only that, where else is he going to find as good a platform to advertise his brand?”

Red Bull, despite a mammoth budget, is one of just a handful of teams which actually makes a profit from competing in F1.

Ecclestone though believes they are spending too much money.

“The teams are spending too much,” he stated. “Look at the top teams; they have a huge number of staff, 700 or more, no one knows the exact numbers.

“All these people to put two cars on the grid on Sundays. It’s ridiculous.”
