Kobayashi in the frame for Caterham seat

Kamui Kobayashi may be about to make a comeback in 2014 following news that Caterham are considering the Japanese driver, according to journalist Adam Cooper.

The 27-year-old was dumped by Sauber at the end of the 2012 season and has been without a seat since.

He attempted to raise funds in order to tempt a team in need of money to employ him, but that never worked out last year.

However with £6.6 million ($11m, €8m) raised from fans and businesses, added to the fact he is highly regarded in the paddock, Kobayashi is being considered for the second Caterham seat alongside Marcus Ericsson.

It was believed that Heikki Kovalainen was the favourite for the seat, but without personal sponsorship and Caterham’s financial struggles, the Finn is a less desirable option.

Kobayashi’s return would be welcomed by Bernie Ecclestone and Honda – who are set to return to the sport as an engine supplier to McLaren in 2015 – as it would boost interest in Japan just as viewership in the country is beginning to decline.
