Mercedes are favourite to take the 2014 title according to rival team boss Martin Whitmarsh, despite Red Bull’s recent dominance which has seen them win everything for the past four years.
The McLaren team principal, whose team uses Mercedes engines for now, says the manufacturer outfit will get a major benefit from designing its own engine.
Ferrari are the only other team to build its own engines, whilst Red Bull have major input into the Renault power unit, but remain a customer.
Speaking to Autosport, Whitmarsh tipped the Anglo-German outfit for success next season.
“My suspicion is that Mercedes will be strongest,” he said. “I am saying it because I am probably a bit biased, but I also have some reasonable knowledge of the budgets of the three companies.
“I think Mercedes has got a good budget, good facilities and good people. I have no real insight and I think nobody has, but I think I have a slightly better insight than most.
“But if you had an absolutely free choice of which one to go for next year, I would say go for Mercedes-Benz next year.”
