Bernie Ecclestone says he’s been disappointed to see Fernando Alonso give up “a little” during the 2013 season after the Spaniard was once again resigned to finishing second behind Sebastian Vettel.
The 83-year-old says it’s a clear sign that Alonso was looking to escape Ferrari at the end of the year – something which was rumoured after he was publicly scolded by president Luca di Montezemolo.
“I’ve been a little disappointed in Fernando, because I’m a big supporter of him and Ferrari,” wrote Ecclestone in a foreword to the official season review.
“I thought he gave up a little bit, which is proof he was looking for another team.”
Alonso is believed to have spoken to rival teams including former employer McLaren, but nothing has come of the talks yet despite rumours he could return in 2015.
Ecclestone hinted that a move might be the right decision as he’s unsure whether Ferrari can deliver a car capable of winning.
“I don’t know whether the team is not competitive because of him or because the people running the team aren’t getting the job done.
“He certainly deserves a car that’s capable of winning races. Whether that is Ferrari or not, I don’t know.”
