Formula 1 team principals will debate the idea of imposing a mandatory two-stop rule in 2014 after Pirelli suggested the idea in November, as reported by The F1 Times.
The F1 Strategy Group will meet on December 9th to discuss a raft of potential changes, but an increase from a minimum of one-stops to two would have the biggest impact on the sport.
In addition, further rules may be implemented to limit the amount of running on each compound as a way to reduce the importance of tyre strategy and re-focus on the racing itself as ‘tyre saving’ would no longer be a requirement.
A set of option tyres (the softer of the two) would be limited to just 30 per cent race distance, whilst the prime (harder) would be limited to 50 per cent.
Pirelli itself has suggested reducing the amount of focus that is put on the tyres after they faced a backlash this season when several tyres exploded at the British Grand Prix.
If the Strategy Group votes in favour, the rule would go before the F1 Commission and the World Motor Sport Council before it’s ratified and included in the 2014 regulations.
