Formula 1 will hold a minute’s silence in honour of the late Maria de Villota who passed away on Friday morning in her Spanish hotel room.

The Spaniard passed away as a consequence of the neurological injuries sustained when she was involved in a F1 testing incident with Marussia in July 2012.

The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, which represents the majority of the grid, confirmed in a statement on Saturday that silence would be held before the drivers’ parade and the podium ceremony would be dedicated to her memory.

“All F1 drivers of the Grand Prix Drivers Association are very saddended to hear of the tragic death of our former member Maria de Villota,” it read.

“She has been an active member and contributed to driver safety in a very enthusiastic and most professional manner.

“Her positive attitude, maturity and extreme commitment will never be forgotten and are something we have learned from.

“Maria will be missed and always remembered by us all.

“The F1 drivers will have one minute silence just before the drivers’ parade tomorrow and the podium will be dedicated to Maria.

“In this incredibly difficult time the F1 drivers would like to extend to her family and friends their most sincere condolences.”
