Brawn confident of more wins and title challenge

Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn believes the championship has been blown open by Lewis Hamilton’s win, which has proved that Mercedes has what it takes to mount a challenge.

Whilst the outfit had won two races previous to Hungary, the change in tyres left many fearing Mercedes would no longer be as competitive. In fact, the change seems to have helped the Brackley outfit which has led Brawn to believe can challenge rivals Red Bull, Lotus and Ferrari for more wins.

“It [the championship] is so fragile. I think it is still open and we certainly won’t be giving up,” he said. “This was a very good weekend for the team – from beginning to end.

“We had a very good programme on Friday. The balance wasn’t great but we did things on Friday and Saturday that helped.

“If we can replicate that, there is no reason why we cannot win more races. If we don’t replicate it then we won’t.

“But we have to get both cars to the finish. We didn’t do that here and you have to have both cars right up there.”

Whilst Brawn wouldn’t go as far as saying their problems were solved, he is certain they’re making progress with the tyres.

“I hope it is another step,” he added. “It is an important step and to get that race win, there is absolutely no reason why more should not follow.”
