Pirelli will bring the soft and medium compound tyres to the Hungarian Grand Prix instead of the previously announced medium and hard combination.
The supplier believes the two softer, more aggressive tyres showed better than expected durability and performance in Germany and have therefore decided they would best suit the Hungaroring too.
The change will please Lotus who complained that the intitial choice was “very conservative” and would hurt their pace as the E21 is particularly kind to its tyres.
“I think it’s quite right that we are going to Hungary with the soft and medium; if you went soft and super-soft I think it might end up with four stops for everybody and they’re all really struggling,” he told ESPN.
“Here you have see the two contrasts and I think we’ll see something similar in Hungary.”
Whilst the compounds will be the same as Germany, the construction will be tweaked slightly as Pirelli continues to make improvements to the durability of the tyres following the British GP drama.
