Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says he supports Mark Webber in his “very difficult” decision to leave the team and Formula 1.
The Australian announced his decision to leave F1 at the end of 2013 to join Porsche’s new LMP1 endurance project on Thursday ahead of the British Grand Prix.
In a statement, the team thanked him for his six years of dedication.
“Infiniti Red Bull Racing would like to thank him for the extensive contribution he has made to the team during the seven seasons he has driven for us.”
Horner added: “I am sure Mark thought long and hard before making what has no doubt been a very difficult decision.
“His achievements in Formula One are extensive and I am sure he will continue to push hard and build on that record until the end of the season.
“We support Mark’s decision, he has been an excellent addition to the team since joining us in 2007 and we wish him all the best in the next stages of his career.”
The statement added that a decision as to who would replace Webber will come later in the year – with many expecting it to be Kimi Raikkonen.
“The decision on who will replace Webber will not be made until later in the season.”
