Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo says he is keen to see Mercedes punished for their involvement in the private tyre test scandal which has hit the sport.

Mercedes and Pirelli will appear before the FIA’s International Tribunal on June 20th to determine whether they broke the rules with regards a 1000km test using a current car following the Spanish Grand Prix.

Montezemolo “has faith in the FIA” and is confident the tribunal will come to the correct outcome – though he urged them to punish the Anglo-German outfit.

“We have faith in the FIA,” he said. “I do not wish to comment, but I note with satisfaction that the Federation is following this incident well.

“Let’s hope Formula 1 can maintain its professionalism and we have faith that those who attempt to circumvent the regulations are pursued and prosecuted, or rather more prosecuted than pursued.”

Should the IT find Mercedes guilty, they could face heavy sanctions from fines to exclusion from the championship. Pirelli on the other hand, being a supplier, face less severe penalties.
