Sebastian Vettel eased to his first Canadian Grand Prix win by scampering away at the start of the race and steadily pulling out a gap to finish over 14 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard overcame Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages of the race to finish second and minimise the damage to his championship hopes.

Mark Webber couldn’t keep pace with the top three and finished ten seconds behind the Mercedes. He did suffer front-wing damage after backmarker Giedo van der Garde made contact as the Australian attempted a pass – the Caterham was later called in for a stop/go penalty.

The second Mercedes of Nico Rosberg rounded off the top five and the final car not to be lapped by the dominant Vettel.

Jean-Eric Vergne made up one place to sixth, but the most impressive performance went to Paul di Resta who, despite starting 17th, finished 7th after managing his tyres to stop just once.

Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen – who equals a record points scoring streak of 24 consecutive races – and Adrian Sutil rounded off the top ten.

Saturday’s man of the moment, Valtteri Bottas, couldn’t keep his target to remain in the points as he finished just 14th.
