Williams is almost certain to announce it has signed a deal with Mercedes to use their power units from 2014 onwards in a three-year deal.
In Monaco on Saturday Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff confirmed talks are taking place with the Grove outfit, which is keen to drop Renault power because of the cost of its engine package.
“It’s clear we are losing an engine customer in 2015 [McLaren to Honda] and for Mercedes it is important to have a regular business case and it is important to have at least three customers from 2015 onwards,” he said.
“This is why we are having certain discussions and Williams is one of them,” he revealed.
Meanwhile, three high-level members of Mercedes, Niki Lauda (chairman), Andy Cowell (managing director of Mercedes High Performance Powertrains) and Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber (Daimler AG and Mercedes board member for research & development), were spotted in the Williams motorhome on Saturday evening where they were taken to a private area, emerging some 30 minutes later.
It’s believed the deal has already been signed and an announcement could happen on Sunday, though some sources believe they will wait until the British Grand Prix in late June.
