Pirelli will look at adapting its tyres once again following complaints of high tyre wear, after the majority of the field had to stop four times during the Spanish Grand Prix.
The company’s motorsport director Paul Hembery admitted the hard and medium tyres – the hardest in its range – wore out too quickly and with the majority stopping four times, it doesn’t meet their initial criteria.
“We aim for two to three pitstops and it was too aggressive today,” he said in light of the criticism. “We want to get back to our plan.”
He admits making changes mid-season is difficult to do, especially following a recent change to the hard compound prior to the Spanish GP. However, it will be evaluated and if the decision is made to adapt them, it’s likely the change would come into effect at the British GP in late-June.
“We would look for Silverstone, but you have to bear in mind that we have a lot of teams against it and just one [Red Bull] maybe for,” he explained.
“So if I said we were going to make a change, I know I am going to have the podium people today not happy – then you [the media] will be here at Silverstone telling me we have given the championship to Red Bull. It will be damned if you do, damned if you don’t.”
