Fernando Alonso cruised to victory at his home race, the Spanish Grand Prix, after coming through from fifth on the grid to first in the opening laps where he stayed for the remaining 60.

Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen split the Ferraris in second, unable to challenge the Spaniard for the victory but comfortably finished ahead of Felipe Massa in third.

Sebastian Vettel, who was odds on favourite to win, didn’t have the race pace to match those ahead despite jumping Lewis Hamilton at the start to take second – but he faded in the race to finish over 40 seconds behind Alonso.

Mark Webber came in fifth ahead of pole sitter Nico Rosberg who, once again and as was the case in Bahrain, didn’t have the race pace to even trouble the top five.

His team-mate Hamilton had a worse time, struggling with tyre wear, finished out of the points for the first time this season in 12th, compounding Mercedes’s poor Sunday performances.

McLaren enjoyed their best race weekend despite a troubled start to the weekend. Both Jenson Button and Sergio Perez finished in the points to take 8th and 9th respectively whilst Daniel Ricciardo secured the final point for Toro Rosso.

Charles Pic put Caterham’s upgrades to good use and beat the Marussia cars, though his team-mate retired after losing his left-rear wheel.
