McLaren are counting on their Spanish Grand Prix upgrade to deliver a significant performance boost in the hope it will get them on a level with the frontrunners.
The Woking-based outfit has endured one of its worst starts to a season, having scored just 14 points from three races compared to Red Bull’s 78.
Team principal Martin Whitmarsh admitted he was disappointed with their latest effort in China, despite having led the race for a handful of laps.
“I would like to be leading it when the chequered flag comes out,” he said.
“I am not delighted. I cannot be delighted. To be honest, I am disappointed about it.
“An enormous amount of work went into some modifications which were a bit on the fly, a bit of a try here [in China], and I think we made a bit of progress but not as much as I would like.”
He is now counting on their next upgrade in Spain – a race which sees almost all of the teams bring upgrades as they return to Europe from the flyaways.
“Overall I am a bit disappointed but we now have to make sure that the big package coming for Spain delivers.
“It has to deliver something.”
