Lewis Hamilton isn’t expecting an easy ride on Sunday in China, despite a healthy qualifying margin over second placed man Kimi Raikkonen.
The Mercedes driver will start on pole – his first with the team since joining two races ago – which he described as “incredible”.
“It’s an incredible feeling and I’m so happy to have our first pole,” he said after. “The lap was great, the team has performed well all season and I really hope we can carry that into tomorrow.”
Hamilton isn’t however expecting it to be an easy victory despite the qualifying margin, especially with the high tyre wear and the cars starting on the medium compound which include Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel.
“The margin was really surprising because in FP3 the Ferraris were very quick and we didn’t know where they’d be in qualifying,” he added.
“It would be great to convert the position in the race tomorrow but it’s going to be a challenge and we’re realistic about how tough the race will be.
“The soft tyres don’t last for very long, and with a couple of quick guys starting on the mediums, it’ll be interesting to see how the race plays out. I’m looking forward to it and will give it my all.”
