Sebastian Vettel insists nothing is guaranteed in Formula One and his current lead, which stands at 13 points to Fernando Alonso, could be wiped out in an instance.
The German may be the bookies favourite, enjoy a healthy lead over his nearest rival and drive what is regarded as the fastest car, but he remains vulnerable and says 2010 proves how easy it is to lose out – as Alonso did when he went into the final race ahead of his rivals, but missed out on the title.
“It doesn’t take much and you might end the race not scoring the points that you were hoping for, and then the whole picture looks different again with the points system we’ve had since 2010,” said Vettel.
“In 2010 in particular various people got written off and then written back in depending on recent results. That’s something we shouldn’t forget.”
However, the team remains in a very strong position in the Constructors’ Championship and could in fact secure the title with a good result in Abu Dhabi this weekend, something Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber joked about during their flight from India to the UAE.
“We were both on the same plane, and Mark said it would be quite bad for the constructors’ if this plane went down,” he added.
“But obviously it would be very special for us to win the championship here. In order to do so we have to have a strong weekend and score more points than the others.”
