Perez: ‘Quite a job’ to catch Mercedes

Sauber have their work cut out if they’re to catch Mercedes before the end of the season in the hope of securing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, according to Sergio Perez.

The Swiss outfit currently sits 20 points adrift in sixth, and has only managed to outscore Mercedes by 12 points in the previous four races of the season.

“I cannot believe we have only four races left, so the season will now end quite soon,” said the Mexican who is set to leave Sauber for McLaren at the end of the year.

“To make up 20 points to finish fifth in the Constructors’ World Championship means we have quite a job to do,” he added.

Despite the gap, Perez is confident that their car will suit the next circuit.

“The race in India should be a bit better for us than in Korea, and our car will be quicker there,” he said. “I like the fluent sections of the track.”

Newly promoted team principal Monisha Kaltenborn is of the same opinion as Perez.

“It is clear we want to score a lot of points, be it in India or at any of the remaining four races.

“Technically the track in Greater Noida should not be a problem for the C31, but it isn’t our favourite either. We have to stay focussed and maximise our potential there.”
