Alonso: ‘A wet race is better for Ferrari’

Fernando Alonso says a wet race may improve his chances of securing a podium finish at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Ferrari driver has excelled in wet conditions this season, first taking victory in Malaysia when a downpour hit the circuit, whilst his third and last win this year came in Germany where he secured pole position during a damp Q3.

During a Shell media event in Belgium, the Spaniard admitted the additional risk of a wet race can present many different opportunities to win.

“When your car is competitive and you are good on that weekend, maybe a dry race is better because it is more consistent,” he said.

“If you are quick you are 99 percent on the podium, which would be a good result for us already. If you are not competitive, I am sure wet conditions are a help because you can do more, like choose the right tyre at the right moment.

“I don’t know at the moment, but looking at this year’s championship, maybe a wet race is better for us. At the same time, wet means more risk. There is aquaplanning, white lines, kerbs, so a wet race can help you a lot and take a lot as well.”

His main aim however is to finish in the points at every race, something he has managed to do at every race so far in 2012, unlike the other 23 drivers.

“I think with the championship you must finish races, you must always score points and a wet race means more risk, but, it is more of a risk for everybody,” he concluded.
