Barrichello: ‘Williams would benefit from me’

Rubens Barrichello hasn’t turned his back on Formula 1 completely, and still believes there may be a way for him to return in the future.

The veteran of 322 F1 starts, a career which lasted a record 19 years before his departure at the end of the last season, now competes in IndyCar for KVRacing. Whilst he harbours a desire to return to the sport in which he made his name, he isn’t using IndyCar as a stop gap.

“I think there’s still a way back [to F1]. I’m not using IndyCar as an emergency. I race because I love racing,” he told Auto und Motor Sport.

When asked if he continued to follow F1, despite his new career, he responded: “Every detail. I study each sector time, I get very accurate information on tyres and the cars from friends, even at five in the morning. My wife complains that I’m completely crazy.”

The Brazilian believes it’s Williams loss that he no longer drives for them, adding that he could do great things in the FW34, a car which won the Spanish Grand Prix at the hands of Pastor Maldonado.

“My heart bleeds that I’m not there,” he said. “I think it’s just a shame for Williams, because I think that this year I would make really big contribution. Not just for me, also for the team. Williams would benefit from me.

“I would have been a good team-mate for [Bruno] Senna, [Valtteri] Bottas or Maldonado.

“Look at Maldonado. He had fewer accidents last year than he has had this season. He is super fast, but with me by the side, he would be a lot more controlled.

“Okay, he has a lot more points to his name than last year. But with this car they could compete with the top three.”
