McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh says he won’t stand for re-election as FOTA chairman after holding the position for almost three years.
The role, previously held by Ferrari’s Luca di Montezemolo, is supposed to work on a 12-month rotational basis, but Whitmarsh has been elected to the position on three occasions.
This will however be his last after he confirmed to Autosport that he will quit the position at the end of the season.
“I’m never going to volunteer for it,” he said. “I think it’s probably healthy, I suppose it’s three years or whatever, I think it would be quite healthy for someone else to do it now. I think it’s for the teams to decide on that.
“We’ll see what happens, but my recommendation to them will be that someone else does it. It’ll be a good opportunity for them.”
Whitmarsh added that he would back either Ross Brawn or Eric Boullier to take over the role.
