Peter Sauber, co-owner and team principal of the Sauber F1 team, has hailed their current car, the C31, their best yet.
The 68-year-old’s comments come after Sergio Perez finished third in Canada last weekend and second in Malaysia earlier in the season.
“For me, this result is more valuable than the second place in Malaysia,” he told Blick. “Canada was a completely normal race – no rain, no safety car, and the only retirement [ahead of Perez] was Schumacher.
“I repeat: Hinwil has built the best car we have had since entering Formula 1 in 1993,” he insisted. “75 per cent of the success is solely in the area of aerodynamics, and we are now the envy of most of our opponents.”
However both he and CEO Monisha Kaltenborn understand the need to qualify better if they’re to continue battling the top teams.
“It’s true, we have to improve in qualifying,” he added, with Kaltenborn agreeing: “It is our clear target to improve on the qualifying because if we can manage to get the car further in front on the grid, we can be far quicker and show even more the potential of this car, so this is really going to be our target to get further in front.”
