Kimi Raikkonen says his comeback has been much easier compared to that of seven time world champion Michael Schumacher.
Schumacher returned to the sport in 2010 after a three year absence but failed to make much of an impact on the championship. Many pointed toward his age as the determining factor in his less competitive form, but Raikkonen, who returned this season after two years away from the sport, says the explanation is much simpler; the Lotus is a much better car.
“It’s just about whether you have a good car or not,” Raikkonen told Sport Bild. “It has made life much easier for me.
“He [Schumacher] was not so lucky in his return,” added the Finn.
Mercedes have made big steps forward with the W03 and look likely to fight for pole position this season and possibly podium places, something Raikkonen is hopeful of with the Lotus E20.
“The car is good,” he added. “Whether it’s good enough for victory or not, I don’t know. At least we are not far away from the top.”
