Bernie Ecclestone is hoping Red Bull’s rivals can end the dominance of the Milton Keynes based outfit in 2012, as he looks to avoid another season in which the championship is decided before the final race.
The 81-year-old, a keen supporter of Sebastian Vettel, would rather see one of his rivals win the championship, even admitting that if Red Bull’s Adrian Newey designs another dominant car, then he’d be backing Mark Webber for the title.
“I hope not,” he said in reply to whether he hoped Vettel would dominate the season again. “Of course, Red Bull are still going to be there but I would much prefer a fight for the world title right to the end of the season,” he told the Salzburger Nachrichten.
When asked if Webber could beat Vettel in 2012, he replied: “Yes. This year we will see a situation where he can show his talent much more.”
The F1 mogul is also hoping for improvements from Mercedes and Ferrari, and fully expects the former to win its first race this season.
“I would be surprised if Mercedes don’t win a race this year,” he added.
“At Ferrari, I can only hope for a significant improvement. Alonso is super-talented and deserves a perfect car.”
