Whilst the Interlagos circuit hasn’t seen many major changes since it was redesigned in 1990, the FIA’s Charlie Whiting has confirmed that big changes are planned for 2012.
The circuit will remain in its current guise for this weekends grand prix, but following a fatality earlier this year, the FIA has asked the organisers to make changes to the start/finish straight, pit entry and run-off areas.
Gustavo Sondermann, competing in the 2011 Copa Chevrolet Montana series, lost his life after he collided with the concrete barriers which surround the outside of the high-speed corner.
Due to the proximity of the grandstands to the circuit, they will need to be removed to allow for a much larger run-off area, Whiting confirmed.
“There are a couple of minor changes to the circuit but next year there could be something much bigger: we’re hoping to build a new pit entry and a larger run-off around the last corner, but this is a big job as it will require removing a couple of permanent grandstands.
“We’ve had assurances from the city of Sao Paulo that they’ll support this project.”
