Lewis Hamilton says he would like to make amends with Felipe Massa following a very public falling out between the fierce rivals.
The pair have made contact six times this season, most recently at the Indian Grand Prix just under a fortnight ago. Massa was penalised for that incident, but it has often been Hamilton under the spotlight for his advantageous, yet risky moves.
The McLaren driver admitted that they hadn’t spoken for some time, other than on the Indian grid after a minutes silence in tribute to Dan Wheldon and Marco Simoncelli, in which the 26-year-old patted the Ferrari driver on the back and wished him well for the race.
Hamilton is hoping to clear the tension between the two, but confessed it must be a two-sided apology for it to mean anything.
“I haven’t spoken to him,” he said. “I would like to clear the air, but we have to meet in the middle, it can’t just come from one side. He has to be willing as well.
“We’ve had our collisions on the track, but I really don’t have any problems with him, and that’s been the same all year.”
Hamilton added that he hoped to avoid being anywhere near Massa on Sunday, as he looks to fight for victory – which would be his third of the season – whilst Massa has failed to finish on the podium in 19 races.
“I definitely plan to be nowhere near him,” concluded Hamilton.
