The Williams outfit have confirmed that ‘serious negotiations’ are, and have taken place with Kimi Raikkonen, amid rampant speculation that he could be joining the team in 2012.
The Finnish driver recently visited the Williams factory, which sparked rumours that he could replace Rubens Barrichello at the Oxford based outfit.
Williams shareholder Toto Wolff confirmed the rumours to be true and said negotiations with the 2007-champion were underway, but he was one of several options.
“Yes, it’s true. The Kimi Raikkonen file is on the table,” Wolff told Kronen Zeitung. “The story is not for show, we are negotiating seriously, but he is only one of several options. There will be a strategic decision.
“But there is another aggressive option with the boy Jules Bianchi, and Valtteri Bottas is worthy of consideration at least for Friday’s practice sessions.”
It’s believed that an announcement could come as early as next week, but the deal hangs on sponsorship from the Qatar National Bank (QNB).
