Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has praised McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton and his constant attacking mode, no matter what situation he finds himself in.
The Italian’s comments will only further fuel the rumours that Hamilton is looking to escape McLaren and join either Red Bull or Ferrari in the future.
The Brit’s recent comments will also do very little to dampen the flames after he said a move to Ferrari couldn’t be ruled out, even if it meant partnering former-teammate and nemesis Fernando Alonso.
“We are talking about a fantastic team and you never know what could happen in the future,” he said this week.
Domenicali, speaking to the Telegraph says Hamilton is among the top three drivers in the sport, alongside his own driver, Alonso, and current championship leader Sebastian Vettel, though no mention of Felipe Massa.
“I always state that in my view the top three drivers in the championship are Fernando, Lewis and Sebastian,” he said.
“I can understand the criticism he has received because I know how this sport works, not only with Lewis but also with our drivers. It is part of the game. And when a driver has such great potential you hope to see him behave a different way in certain situations but that is the nature of different drivers.”
Going further, the 46-year-old believes Hamilton’s attitude to racing is a ‘great thing’ to have in a driver.
“As far as I can see from the outside Lewis is always in attack mode,” he added. “It’s funny sometimes behind a safety car [in the rain] you hear all the drivers saying ‘No way, I cannot see anything’. And then you get Lewis and he is saying ‘No, no. Let’s go for it’. And for a driver to have this attitude is a great thing.”
