John Watson, former McLaren, Brabham and Lotus driver, has called the pairing of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, the perfect line-up.
The 65-year-old believes the aggression of which Hamilton exudes, matched with the calmness and maturity of Button, creates a perfect balance between the two drivers.
“Lewis is aggressive, what Jenson brings to the team is maturity and stability,” he told TalkSport Radio. “There is a perfect balance between the two drivers, a hot rod in Lewis and a more understanding Jenson. Together it makes a great team,” he added.
Indeed the pairing have won two races apiece this season, only Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel has won more.
When the comparison of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost was brought up, Button said he could see why people would compare him and Hamilton to the two-former McLaren teammates.
Senna, a fiery Brazilian who would always go for the smallest of gaps, matched with the cool-headed Prost, won McLaren two Drivers’ titles and two Constructors’ titles whilst they were teammates.
Whilst Button and Hamilton are yet to match that, the 31-year-old said he was happy to be compared to Prost, whilst he agreed that Hamilton was similar to Senna.
“I would agree with that,” conceded Button. “I like such comparisons. Ayrton was perhaps quicker over a single lap, but Alain would win races because of other things.
“He might be quicker over a race distance, because he could look after his car and his tyres. He knew how quick you had to be to get to lap 60, when the chequered flag came out, not just until lap 30.”
