Lewis Hamilton says he hopes McLaren can deliver a one-two in Silverstone in just under two weeks time, despite the pace deficit they have to leaders Red Bull.
The 2008-world champion has changed his tune since last Sunday when he all but ruled out a good result at the British Grand Prix, nor the possibility of challenging for the title.
His comments came after a fourth place finish in Valencia in which he didn’t have the pace to challenge Red Bull or Ferrari. He’s under no illusions that to win would be difficult, but he says he hasn’t given up.
“I know what we are up against, but nothing is impossible,” said Hamilton on Tuesday. “What we really want is a one-two – think what that would do for British sport and the fans. It would feel massively special to us.”
He’s also not given up on his title ambitions just yet, adding: “It’s never over until it’s over. We’re only coming up to halfway [in the season], and if we were to win all the other grands prix then we can still win the championship. There’s still a big gap but nothing is impossible.”
His teammate, Jenson Button, is setting his sights on a podium finish, something he has never achieved in front of his home crowd.
“You always want to do well in front of your home crowd. Last year was just a sea of rocket red caps everywhere, and it was quite emotional.
“It was great to see the support, and you always want to put on a good show for your own fans. Hopefully this year I can get a podium finish.”
