Fernando Alonso still insists he is in the hunt for his third championship win this season, despite a 96-point deficit to leader Sebastian Vettel after seven races.
The Ferrari driver hasn’t had the best start to a season. It took four races until he was on the podium and his best finish to date is second in Monaco.
Though the Spaniard says he will keep pushing until it’s mathematically impossible to take the 2011 title.
“The title is not lost because it is still mathematically possible [to win],” he told AS.
The Ferrari driver is hoping for some non-finishes for his competitors to close the gap, particularly Vettel.
“We have seen some withdrawals in recent years, as Hamilton did in Monza and Singapore last year. And if you win two races and Vettel is removed [from the result], the gap decreases.
“Certainly [that is] not in our hands, so we have to concentrate every weekend, try to do our best, race by race, be on the podium and try to win.”
He admitted that if that wasn’t the case, then Red Bull would be in a very good position to defend their titles.
“If Red Bull make no mistakes, they have a very good position in the championship,” concluded Alonso.
Ferrari do however hope to make big gains over the coming races as the FIA have chosen to push ahead with their exhaust-blown diffuser ban, which is expected to curb Red Bull’s dominance.
