Jenson Button has said that he will not be following in the footsteps of Fernando Alonso as he wants his future to “remain open.”
The Brit, who took the win in Canada with over one-fifth of the total over-takes within the race, 27 of a total 127, has said that he doesn’t wish to tie himself down and although he “might be around for 3 years, 5 years,” he doesn’t know how he will feel and “can’t imagine racing at 40.”
Button has a dedication to McLaren and admits that when he finishes racing for the Woking-based team, he will be finishing racing in F1 for good. Button told Autosport, “I’m driving for one of the best teams in the world. It’s a position most drivers would love to be in and I’ve worked very hard for it.”
Rumors that the 2009 champion may be on the move to Ferrari when his contract with McLaren come to an end are rife within the sport, however, his comments to the press seem to suggest otherwise. One thing is for certain, the Brit’s memories of his championship win in 2009 are still fresh in his mind.
“Should not I be world champion again, I certainly would not leave F1 thinking that I’ve missed something,” he told Switzerland’s Blick, “The memories of 2009] will never be far away and, even when I’m old and grey, it will feel like yesterday.”
