Adrian Sutil says Sebastian Vettel is the reason for his mid-race crash with Nico Rosberg in Canada under safety car conditions.
The Force India driver blames Vettel for backing the pack up too much, meaning cars had to bunch up closer than usual which resulted in Sutil running into the back of the Mercedes.
“The race started to go wrong for me when I touched Rosberg’s rear tyre under the safety car for Alonso’s crash,” he said.
“Vettel slowed down the pack so much, and I almost had to stop. My wing was damaged but the car felt OK and my pace was still good.”
The German then received a penalty, not for hitting Rosberg, but for overtaking under the safety car, which he says was a result of Rosberg slowing down, having thought the earlier clash had punctured his rear-tyre.
“I got a drive-through penalty for overtaking Rosberg under the safety car,” added Sutil. “He slowed down on the straight because he thought he had a puncture, so that is something that I was surprised about. There was no other chance for me to react. I think was a little bit unlucky.”
Sutil went on to retire from the race after a clash with the wall at turn seven, his team-mate, Paul di Resta, also retired after coming in contact with the wall.
