Jenson Button has labelled the Canadian GP his best career win to date after he snatched victory from Sebastian Vettel on the final lap and fought back from last.
He had an unlucky start after a collision with his team-mate in which nobody was to blame, according to the stewards. A drive-through penalty came a little later for speeding behind the safety car before a puncture was the result of contact between the McLaren and the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso.
Despite being last at one point, a series of five pit-stops, six including his drive-through, the 2009-champion bravely battled to the front in the torrid conditions to challenge Vettel on the very last lap before an error from the championship leader gave Button the lead.
The 31-year-old says the says the day has been very special for him it’s not only his first win of the season, but it’s his first with his new race engineer, Dave Robson.
“That was the best victory of my career, and today is therefore a very special day for me,” said Button. “I fought my way from last to first to win the race, and I overtook the cars in front of me on the track.
“To win a grand prix by getting one over on your rivals with a series of strong overtaking moves makes it even better.
“I want to offer big congrats to Dave [Robson], my race engineer. We haven’t won together before, so this is a very special result for him as well as for me. Now, I just want to enjoy this moment; it’s been a long time coming and it couldn’t have been much sweeter.
“I can’t stop smiling now!”
